“When a friend and I went grocery shopping, she bought five jugs of milk. When she saw my questioning face, she said her family drank a lot of milk, so I just shrugged it off. A week later, she told me all of the milk had spoiled. It took us a while to figure out what went wrong, and when we finally did, I couldn’t believe it.”
“She didn’t know there was fresh milk that needed to be refrigerated, and shelf-stable milk that did not. She, of course, bought the fresh milk, not knowing any better, and put it in the pantry. Apparently, her mom only ever bought shelf-stable milk, and she had no idea that any other kind even existed.
We were in our early twenties, so it wasn’t THAT surprising, but I teased her about it for years.”
