The original poster, u/bloodmeadowsthen replied“No, the picture is not sideways. Great question. It turns out that when you turn this thing on, it lowers part of the wall downwards, and we found a secret storage area. Here is a photo and a GIF of the machine working. My dad took apart all of the drywall to see how it works. There’s a very small bolt at the entrance you can turn, which activates it. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything in there but some empty shelves. I wonder what made the previous owners think of creating such a contraption, or what they were trying to hide. It’s our secret compartment now!”
