"Your Clothes Are Actually Dirty": This Expert Is Sharing The One Thing He Always Stays Away From When Doing Laundry
âIâm always going to use laundry soap … Itâs soap thatâs made [specifically] for laundry and then itâs grated or ground,â Richardson said. âItâs going to be the cleanest, most gentle [choice].â
But it can be difficult to find, so, if itâs not available, he recommends buying detergent made specifically for baby clothes, which is also going to be gentle. Just make sure youâre not using pods.
âI donât care if [your laundry detergent] comes as powder or liquid, but I donât like pods because I donât like that you canât control the amount,â he said. âYou donât need a podâs worth of detergent … I think you only need about two tablespoons of detergent [for a load]so a bottle of laundry detergent might last you a year because you only need a couple of tablespoons for your clothes to come out clean.â
Richardson advised that a little detergent goes a long way, like salt.
âWhen youâre cooking and the recipe says a half tablespoon of salt, and you put it in, itâs delicious,â he said. âBut if youâre like, âI love salt,â and you put in a whole cup, itâs ruined, itâs not better. So thatâs how to think about detergent: a little bit is really good, because it does what itâs supposed to do. If you add a whole lot more, you actually ruin it.â
